7 Best Non Toxic Bassinets

Lotus Bassinet Kit & Travel Crib

A lot of parents highly recommend the Guava Lotus for its non-toxic and super convenient features.

This 2-in-1 travel kit bundle is GreenGuard™ Gold certified and also meets safety standards, from ASTM F-406, CPSIA 2008, Playpens Regulation (Canada), and more.

It’s lightweight and easy to set up and disassemble, making it super convenient to bring to travel or vacations.

The whole bassinet setup measures 50″ L x 31″ W x 26″ H while the crib is at 45.5″ L x 31.5″ W x 25.5 H.

The Guava Lotus Bassinet Kit then can also be converted into a travel crib, which can be used for a couple more years, giving you value for your money!

It’s also very stable and spacious, even for a taller, heavier baby.

You can also rock it to comfort your baby!

The only downside to it is that you can’t bring it up to your bed’s height, especially if you have a tall bed, to easily reach and carry your baby for nursing.

Plus, the conversion kit doesn’t include fitted sheets, so you have to get it separately. One mom mentioned that she got an Ely’s & Co bassinet sheet which fit the Lotus mattress.

Still, it’s one of the top, most popular travel bassinets out there, that has a lot of positive reviews and recommendations from tons of parents. It’s certifiably safe for your baby!

BABYBJÖRN Baby Cradle Non-Toxic Bassinet

The BABYBJÖRN Baby Cradle meets both European and American safety standards, EN 13209-2:2005 and ASTM F2194.

All fabrics used in the BabyBjorn cradle are certified Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Class I. This means that they are safe and free from hazardous substances and allergens that can harm your newborn.

It measures 23 x 31 x 26 in or 58 x 79 x 65 cm, making it suitable for small bedrooms.

It has an airy mesh side, making it easy to check on your baby. The mesh side also allows for easy cleaning, along with its waterproof mattress.

The BABYBJÖRN Baby Cradle also comes with a self-rocking feature! When your baby stirs and moves slightly, the cradle will gently rock on its own, comforting and lulling your little one to sleep.

The only downside to this bassinet is you need to keep bending to get your baby, as you can’t adjust its legs to make the bassinet higher.

Their Archie Portable Bassinet is GreenGuard™ Gold certified, finished in a non-toxic multi-step painting that’s free from lead and phthalate.

When assembled, it measures 39″ x 20.16″ x 32″. Small enough for a room with limited space. One mom even mentioned that it’s narrow enough, so she bought 2 for her twins!

It comes with removable wheels, so it’s easy to move around the house when needed.

It also has a shelf underneath, which is useful for keeping diapers, blankets, and other baby-related items.

It’s very easy to put together, although a few parents mentioned that when put tightly, the wood tends to crack and splinter so you have to be careful.

Sheets are not included, so you have to buy it separately for its waterproof pad but it’s an overall quality bassinet that’s value for money.

What to Look For in Non-Toxic Bassinet or Co-Sleeper

Safety Standard Certifications

Learn the meaning of certain “Green” certifications and standards, to know if a product is really non-toxic and organic as they say it is.

GreenGuard™ Gold certificate means a product has been tested and certified to emit only minimal gasses or lower than usual chemicals or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature.

Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® means that every textile part of a product – thread, fabric, article, etc. -, has been tested for harmful substances and is considered harmless to one’s health.

A JPMA Certification Seal focuses on a product’s functionality and performance.

A JPMA certified bassinet means it has met minimum government requirements established by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), based on safety and use, through lab testing and follow-up on-site inspection of the manufacturer’s production line.

Some bassinets in this article have met and/or exceeded European standards which some will argue is higher than US standards.

Most parents would opt for a bassinet to maximize the space in their baby’s room or their bedroom.

A bassinet with a smaller footprint, one where you won’t be tripping on its feet all the time, is ideal to have.

Something that can be easily folded and tucked away is also beneficial for families living in smaller homes or have limited space.

Some bassinets are easier to push and pull towards the bed. Or that can even be moved around the house!

While some are too heavy to carry from one room to another and won’t even breeze through a door frame if you try to wheel it around.

So consider how you would use the bassinet.

Does your family frequently travel and would you prefer to bring the bassinet every time? Will you be moving it around the house so your baby can be near you all the time?

If that’s the case then the best portable bassinet would be best suited for your family.

Or would it become a semi-permanent fixture in the bedroom, only moving it when needed when breastfeeding at night?

A bassinet with a mesh side is ideal to have so you can quickly check up on your baby without having to get up from your bed or chair.

Plus it’s also safer, especially when your baby turns to the side and gets too close to the bassinet’s wall.

A retractable side is also nice to have, so you can easily get them from the bassinet.

Bassinets might be a lot smaller than a crib but it still needs to be durable and stable, even for a bigger and heavier baby.

So look for one that’s not shaky and rickety, that has a very strong frame.

It’s ideal to look for something that can be adjusted to accommodate a tall or high bed. So c-sect or breastfeeding moms don’t need to keep getting up and bending down to carry their little ones for feeding or comforting.

Newborn Safe Sleep Recommendations

Follow safe sleeping guidelines

Don’t put anything inside the bassinet that might suffocate your baby. It’s also better to use the mattress that comes with the bassinet as that fits in it perfectly. Get to know more about safe sleep for babies here.

• A firm and thin mattress is okay for newborns

The seemingly thin and hard mattress that comes with the bassinet is safe to use for your newborn.

It might be uncomfortable for adults but it’s supposed to feel firm, it shouldn’t be too thick (not more than 1.5 inches) and it shouldn’t be too soft, so your baby won’t sink in it. Especially when they turn on their side, as that can lead to suffocation.

  • Keep cats out

Pets such as cats can accidentally knock the bassinet or worse, sit on your newborn’s face. So make sure your cat won’t be able to get in the bassinet with these tips.

Do Babies Need a Bassinet?

Babies don’t necessarily need a bassinet, however it does have a lot of advantage.

Bassinet are perfect for those with limited space, who wants to keep their baby close, right next to their beds or who are undecided on what kind of a bed to commit to long term, for their little one.

Tips and Hacks on Non Toxic Bassinets

  • Learn how to clean them

There are many ways to clean bassinets which have been stained from diaper blowouts or worse. Especially second hand ones! Check out various ways on how to clean a dirty bassinet here.

• Swaddle your baby

If your baby doesn’t seem to get comfortable inside their spacious bassinet, try swaddling them with a sleep sack.

So they’ll feel like they’re being hugged, making them feel secure and comforted

Don’t use a muslin blanket or anything that can come loose and unravel when they move while sleeping. It can cover their face and suffocate them.

Check out here how many swaddles do you need for your baby.
