Someone in an online parenting group was kind enough to share Honest’s reply to her email, regarding the alleged brown gunk:

“What you see on your wipes packaging label is the liquid from our wipes that has changed color because it dried out and oxidized after being exposed to the air. This may have happened because the wipes package was squeezed during transport. While we have no concerns with the quality or safety of this product, it is not up to our customer satisfaction standards.”

They are unscented and are free from alcohol, chlorine, petrochemicals, formaldehyde, parabens, and phenols.

I have yet to find any negative feedback about Joonya causing diaper rashes or irritating the baby’s skin.

Most parents are also sharing that they’re well moist and have a good texture.

They’ve also enhanced their wipes with organic Aloe Vera, Chamomile and Jojoba. These ingredients help in moisturizing and soothing your baby’s skin.

A few parents are saying though that they feel dry and are not moist enough.

Made in the UK, Kinder by Nature seems fully transparent with its list of ingredients, as you can see above.

According to their website, they’ve worked with dermatologists and pediatricians in making sure that their baby wipes are gentle and ideal for babies with eczema-prone or sensitive skin.

They have a mixed review however with the quality of the wet wipes, with some parents sharing that they just feel right – not too wet nor too dry either. 

While some are saying, they’re too dry, they have an odd smell and it’s not that gentle on their baby’s skin.

Its material has also received mixed feedback from parents, with some saying they’re great and durable enough to clean their baby.

Other parents are complaining that they feel too thin and dry. They don’t feel wet enough so they have to keep on using a lot of wet wipes, according to some parents.

Their baby wipes contain no artificial fragrances, parabens, or sulfates. It basically contains only 2 main ingredients – water and grapefruit seed extract which acts as a natural skin conditioner. 

This makes Water Wipes one of the best natural baby wipes or as is considered as purest baby wipes in the world!

It also has a 0.02% trace of Benzalkonium Chloride, which acts as a preservative.

Water Wipes is one of the 3 highly recommended baby wipes among the parenting online community.

Parents are just raving about how soft and gentle this is, even for their premature babies and even adults with atopic dermatitis!

It’s not perfect as it still has some complaints of having an off-putting smell and causing rashes to some babies. Especially with the newly improved 100% biodegradable and plastic-free version.

Some have noticed that the new version feels less soft and dry and the wipes are smaller.

But for most parents, these are still their trusted, go-to baby wipes that don’t irritate their baby’s skin.

Hopefully, the complaints they’re receiving lately (as of this publishing) are just from a temporary issue in their manufacturing – a bad batch probably – and they’ll be able to sort out their issues soon.

• Durable

Water Wipes are made from 100% viscose, a plant-based material that’s both soft and strong to clean your baby without it breaking apart in your hands.

Most parents like how moist and durable it was, even when handling diaper blowouts.

But the improved version seems to be putting off some parents. 

According to them, it feels like the material has been downgraded, and now it looks smaller, thinner, and even feels a bit rough and dry.

Water Wipes did share that since their wipes don’t have chemicals to “bind” the liquid to the wipes, the water might go to the bottom of the pack. This can make the wipes feel dry.

So they recommend turning the pack label-side down. Then squeeze and gently massage the pack for a few seconds, to redistribute the water evenly throughout the pack.

Use it within 4 weeks after opening and remember to flip the pack label-side down when keeping it away.

• Packaging

A common complaint in most baby wipes is that you cannot just get just one wipe at a time. 

They are always sticking together, which makes you get several pieces at a time, making you use and buy more baby wipes.

This is also the case with Water Wipes.

Some parents said that it has gotten worse with the newly improved version.

One mom gave a tip though of tying a rubber band around one end of the wet wipes packaging, to make it easy to get one wet wipe at a time.

You can’t get any more natural than New-Zealand made Abby&Finn baby wipes.

They are made mostly with water and only 3 natural ingredients that soothe and nourish your baby’s skin.

They are also free of parabens, soap, alcohol, and more.

• Certifications

Made in New Zealand, according to their website, their baby wipes are dermatologically tested and cruelty-free.

But I’m having some trouble looking for any proof of third-party testing on their website. 

Nor do I have yet to see any seals or certifications of approval from relevant well-regarded and respected organizations.

• Gentle

Parents love how gentle Abby & Finn baby wipes are on their baby’s skin. They even use it to wipe their neck and faces! 

I wouldn’t recommend it on a baby’s face, especially the eye area though.

Nevertheless, for some that have done that, it hasn’t caused any irritation to their baby. 

It’s probably because of the other ingredients that are included in Abby & Finn baby wipes:

Organic Aloe Vera – soothes and provides anti-inflammatory properties 

Natural Vitamin E. – promotes skin health

A few customers said that it feels a bit dry and rough. Some even said they dry out fast! And they had to take out more to give their babies a thorough wiping.

Nevertheless, I like the fact that you can see real reviews on their website.

This means you can see all the positive and even negative ones, giving you an idea of how authentic their brand is.

Some parents also said that the wipes are big and thick enough to wipe big messes.

They said it contains that perfect amount of wetness. The texture and the thickness are also solid, ensuring that the baby wipe doesn’t tear when wiping big diaper explosions.

It’s a mixed review when it comes to their packaging.

Some parents said it’s so easy to take out one wipe at a time. While others still experience that issue of wet wipes clumping, forcing you to take out a lot more than you need.

Here’s what you should look for in a non-toxic baby wipe

Some baby wipes can come with a lot of ingredients, which doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a bad thing.

Just look out for the most common toxic chemicals that can cause absolute havoc on your baby’s skin and can also affect them in the long run, such as:

• Fragrance
• Phthalates
• Parabens
• Alcohol
• Chlorine
• Lanolin
• Phenoxyethanol
• Propylene Glycol

• Texture

Does it feel too dry? Or too wet?

I always used to buy 2 types of baby wipes.

One is the moist baby wipe for diaper blowouts. And the other one that’s not dry but slightly moist. Which I use for just wiping small messes.

Expect non-toxic baby wipes to be more expensive. You’re paying for the process of making them non-toxic, which can be a rigorous and pricey route for the company.

But it shouldn’t be overpriced that it’s not practical anymore for your family.

Other baby wipe alternatives can be items that you can just wet with water, such as washcloths, face cloths, cloth wipes, towels, etc.

Or rinse your baby by the sink then just dry with a towel!

FAQ: Best Toxic-Free Baby Wipes

Alternatives to Disposable Baby Wipes 

I have also searched for baby wipe alternatives and asked around in popular online parenting groups. And the moms and dads there did not disappoint.

Below are their methods and alternatives if you don’t want to use disposable baby wipes:

Medline Dry Wipes

Apparently used in some hospitals. Just wet and go!

Cloth wipes/ Face cloths/ Washcloth

Just wet with lukewarm water.

Some parents add in a little bit of soap and oil-based solution for diaper explosions.

Others advised to keep it in a wipe warmer that’s specifically made for cloth wipes, so it feels better for your baby.

You just apparently, put a stack of washcloths in it, add some water, and voila, you have warm, wet washcloths ready to use!

Just remember to always change it regularly, as you don’t want mold growing in there.

Paper towels

Other parents said that this works for them. 

If you don’t want to solely use water, try a cup of water with grape oil or calendula oil, and/or a tablespoon of baby shampoo.

So you just cut up a roll of paper towels in half and soak them in the said mixture.

Or you can put the mixture in a spray bottle instead and just spray paper towels when needed.

Soft Gauze 

Cut it into smaller pieces and wet it with water. Some parents shared that this is what the nurses used for their premature babies. 

So they also used it for a solid 8 months and just used disposable wipes for bigger messes or diaper blowouts.

Cotton ball

I’ve used this for the first few weeks, mainly for light clean-ups and to clean the crevices.

Just dip it in lukewarm water, and test it out on your skin first, before wiping your newborn.

Rinse in the sink

You don’t need anything except your baby! And a towel of course. Some parents have done this until their baby turned 6 months or so.

Dry disposable wipes

Some parents mentioned using this for their baby for at least 6 months.

They cut up the dry wipes in half, keep a spray bottle of water in their diaper changing station and just spray and wipe.

They also have a small to-go spray bottle in their diaper bag, along with the dry disposable wipes.

According to them, they have 100 of these dry disposable wipes which is more than enough for their twice-a-week laundry schedule. 

They also add small items in the laundry net for the wipes, to prevent the wipes from getting sucked into the crevices of the washer.

Helpful Tips on Using Eco-Friendly Baby Wipes

• Use a hair tie or rubber band

Here’s a brilliant tip to get one wipe at a time – use a hair tie or rubber band on one side of the wet wipe container.

It helps in securing the wipes, so they don’t all get pulled out.

Use cloth wipes or your preferred alternatives to disposable wet wipes at home.

Final Thoughts on Non Toxic Baby Wipes

I’d just like to share that this was one of the hardest articles I’ve ever written so far.

Not because of the lack of information online.

It’s because of the number of opposing views on what counts as a 100% non-toxic baby wipe. 

Or who to trust when it comes to verifying them as a hundred percent non-toxic.

Even well-known companies such as the EWG, where most baby wipe articles are basing their conclusion, also have some issues when it comes to giving a fair and scientific-based review of products.

I also find that a lot of these premium non-toxic baby wipes kinda, well, suck.

They’re supposed to be premium non-toxic baby wipes but you see a lot of complaints about them having some smell, being thin, and easily breaking down when you use them.

I don’t see the point of sacrificing the efficiency of wiping my baby’s butt, for a nearly 100% organic, earth-friendly product.

Why can’t customers have both, especially if we’re paying a premium price!

Okay, rant over.

I was reading some comments about non-toxic baby wipes in this popular parenting group and there’s this one comment that strike me the most, which came from a mom who’s apparently, Ph.D. chemist:

“..every chemical is toxic at a certain concentration. Even water. There’s no need to be afraid of chemicals.” 

Which I totally agree with. Well, I don’t know if she’s really a Ph.D or chemist or both but I still agree with her!

We can’t avoid chemicals, they’re even in the plants and animals – the food that we eat!

So to save our sanity, I don’t think we should get so stressed about it. Especially if you can’t see any glaringly harmful ingredients in a product.

We already have a lot on our plate and it wouldn’t really help anyone to be high-strung looking for a pure, perfect, 100% organic baby wipe.

So as a mother myself, here’s my two cents worth:

Don’t be too scared to try out different brands of baby wipes.

Do an unofficial survey and ask your mom friends/co-workers/acquaintances what baby wipe they used and test it out.

Choose 2-3 brands, buy 1 pack of each then see which one works.

Just like diapers, babies can have different reactions to baby wipes. 

One baby wipe brand might irritate your baby’s skin but it might work for some!
